How to Wear Leggings and Jeggings

How to wear leggings

For some women, leggings are never a style option, but for others, knowing how to wear leggings makes all the difference between looking chic versus looking like a fashion throwback.
Leggings are one of those items that women usually either love or hate. They're easy to slip on, and with the wide range of colors available, they're easy to accessorize. However, they aren't the right choice for every situation.
If you like the ease of leggings, but want to make sure you always wear them appropriately, consider these tips:
  • Wear leggings with tunics: Not all styles of tops work with leggings. The simplest way for women to sport leggings is underneath a tunic. Tunics vary in length, so it's important that your tunic is long enough to cover your hips and rear. Because leggings fit so close to the body, you want your top to come down past your hips - otherwise, this is a look better suited for the gym instead of the street. Your tunic top can be in sweater form or knit jersey material. You can wear a belt with it or not. Just make sure your look is balanced - since a tunic is roomy, your leggings should be fitted. One way to sport a monochromatic, casually elegant ensemble is to wear a black tunic with black leggings and black high heel boots. This is perfect for cool weather.
  • Petites and tall women: Petite women should take care when wearing leggings with a roomy top. Make sure your top is proportioned for shorter women so that it doesn't fall past your mid-thighs - otherwise, it can look like you're wearing a dress with leggings underneath. Also, your ensemble should be as monochromatic as possible for an elongating look. Tall women should also select their tops with care. You want to wear a shirt that comes down far enough so that your rear isn't exposed.
  • Choose the right shoes: Leggings look best with flats, such as ballerina flats, or plain pumps. Boots are another great option to wear with leggings.
  • Don't wear a tight shirt: Because leggings are so fitted, it's best to steer clear of tight shirts for the best look. These items work better when your overall outfit is balanced, pairing roomy with fitted.
  • Wearing leggings with dresses: Dresses that fall at or above the knee can work with leggings. This is one case where a close-fitting dress would look good with leggings, such as a jersey knit dress with a wide belt at the waist. Leggings also work with bohemian fashions or billowy, casual dresses for women.
  • Pair them with mini-skirts: One look that's popular for younger women is pairing leggings with mini-skirts, particularly denim skirts. Slip into a pair of flat shoes, add a coordinating top and this is an easy, casual outfit perfect for weekends.
  • Coordinate colors: Leggings are best used as an accessory to your outfit, not the main ingredient, so choose your ensemble first, then add leggings if you want. Your leggings' color should match something else in your outfit for the most harmonious pairing.

How to wear jeggings
With the return of super skinny jeans and leggings this past couple of years, it’s no wonder the jeggings were invented. Jeggings are basically exremely skinny jeans that look like leggings and are also worn like leggings.

I have to say that in the beginning I was not a fan of the skinny jean or the legging, but as time went on, I came to embrace both, and now, it seems like I can’t even wear any other types of jeans but skinny. The problem with these slim types of bottoms is that they’re hard to dress. And jeggings especially, can be a little tricky.
A Few Thumb Rules
First off, make sure jeggings suit your body type. If you don’t feel comfortable in them, don’t wear them – no one’s going to shun you for it!! Second, pick a dark pair that will go with everything from a basic tank to a sweater dress. Also, black slims you down so that’s always a plus. If you’re on the short side, you may want to get a petite pair as a regular pair of jeggings might run a little too long, and there’s nothing worse than 2 feet of bunched up jeans at the bottom.
So What Exactly Can You Wear Jeggings With?
Jeggings are actually quite versatile, and I feel they do a better job than skinny jeans or leggings would. Because they’re still denim material, you don’t have to cover your butt, but they’re so slim and skin-tight like leggings that you can wear a long sweater or tee, a dress, or just throw a long cardigan over.
I love wearing leggings with a pair of chunky heels, a long sweater and a scarf. Add a big tote to that, and you’re set for the day. So if you’re heading to the mall this week, make sure to pick up a pair of jeggings: it’s all you’ll need!
